On Sunday, May 1, Steve Serwatka of the Court Masters poured in 52 points, his second 50+ point performance of the 2011 HITS Spring League and his second consecutive 50+ point performance.

Serwatka now becomes the only player in HITS Spring League history to score 50+ points in back to back games and to also score 50+ points more than once in the same Spring Season.

Serwatka has scored 102 points in his last two outings.

Serwatka is currently averaging 44.0 ppg in the current 2011 HITS Spring League.

Steve Serwatka's Amazing Spring League Performance

Steve Serwatka of the Court Masters had an amazing performance last night, April 15, 2011, vs B.Q.E in a win, 108-103.

Serwatka tied the record for most three's made by a player in a HITS Spring League game with 10 three's, (Steve Burtt, Jr. 10 three's on April 22, 2007).

Serwatka also became the third player in HITS Spring League History to score 50 or more points (Steve Burtt, Jr's 59 points on April 22, 2007 for Da Firm and Dwight Hardy's 54 points for Court Masters on April 15, 2007)

Spring League Week 1 Recap

The 5th Annual HITS Spring League kicked off Friday night with the Men's League and the Untouchables, 2010 runner-ups, defeating Team 524, 117-97, led by Greg Plummer with 24 points. Team 524 were led by A.J. with 30 points. R2K later on in the night knocked off newcomers, Harlem 4 Life 81-69. R2K were led by Jomo Belfor with 20 points. while H4L were led by Jeff Early with 16 points.

The Youth League (12 and under) kicked off Saturday afternoon with a great performance by the Milbank players who defeated the Wee All-Stars, 53-28. Pedro for Milbank led with 15 points, while Markquis Nowell led the Wee All-Stars with 13 points.

The Metrohawks defeated Harlem Jazz in a close one, 38-35. Metrohawks were led by Akon Lightfoot with 13 points, while Jalaal of Harlem Jazz led his team with 12 points. R2K cruised by Dream Nation 47-24. R2K were led by Donald with 17 points, while Dream Nation were led by Corbin with 8 points.

The Youth League (14 and under) kicked off Sunday afternoon with the R2K contingent defeating Da BX Tigers, 54-25. R2K were led by DaSure Jackson with 25 points, while the Tigers were led by Yahaya Seeibeh with 14 points. Tru Ballaz, led by Jaquan McKennon's 12 points, knocked off Harlem Jazz, 44-35. The Jazz were led by Jake with 11 points.

The Men's League returned Sunday afternoon, displaying the Court Masters vs Team 524. The Court Masters came out firing, hitting nine three-pointers in the first half. Team 524, being down by as many as 15 points, made it a game in the second half, reaching to within one point. But Steve Serwatka of the Court Masters was too hot for Team 524, leading his team with 30 points, hitting 5 three-pointers. Even with a valiant effort, Team 524 could not overcome the Court Masters as they were defeated 113-109. Team 524 were led by James "Stix" Williams with 24 points.

In the weekend finale, the defending champion BSC All-Stars took on B.Q.E. After being down by as many as 20 points, BSC All-Stars stormed back to within 5 after three quarters. With an alley-oop dunk by Kirk Williams creating the momentum they needed, the BSC All-Stars took the lead and never looked back. BSC All-Stars outscored B.Q.E. 48-30 in the second half, after B.Q.E. took control of the entire first half. BSC All-Stars would eventually defeat B.Q.E. 83-77. B.Q.E were led by Kiwan Smith with 17 points. BSC All-Stars were led by Tyshawn Valentine with 18 points.

It was just 12 months ago that Hoops in the Sun was struggling financially. Sponsors had pulled out due to the falling economy and the Cruz brothers – Joe and Randy – paid for almost half of what the tournament in Orchard Beach costs out of their own pockets. It seemed like the end of the popular event was in sight.

But the summer was a success anyway. And after negotiations with Nike, the apparel company was back on board for this season.

Hoops in the Sun celebrated by winning its first Nike Tournament of Champions on Saturday at Gauchos Gym when Bingo’s All-Stars defeated Entertainers Basketball Classic representative Certified.

“It’s monumental,” said Joe, whose father Joe (Pops) Cruz started Hoops in the Sun in 2000 before passing away in 2004. “I just thank Nike for letting us be a part of the program. To win in our first year back with Nike is just magical for us.”

Randy joked that their mother Lydia was going to be sleeping with the large trophy tonight. But it wouldn’t have been a possibility if the brothers didn’t work hard to bring back Nike and many of the sponsors that were lost.

“When all was said and done and the smoke cleared I knew where I needed to be at,” Joe said. “I think that’s where Nike needs to be at – with one of the best tournaments in the city.”

Fittingly, Bingo’s All-Stars, a team from The Bronx, was the one that brought it home for Hoops in the Sun. Not that there was much doubt from the Cruz family once the postseason started. “Once he went through Team 914, once he beat Sean Bell in the championship, once he beat Dyckman in the TOC first round, I knew it was automatic,” Joe said.

Bingo’s wild ride: It was a long, memorable day for Bingo Cole. Before the legendary streetball coach got to celebrate his first Nike Tournament of Champions title, he had to endure two other games. He guided Bingo’s All-Stars in the TOC semifinals against Dyckman representative Takes No Prisoners and, two games later, coached the Bronx team against Queens in the Battle of the Boroughs high school final.

“Three games? Incredible,” Cole said. “I was exhausted. The heat in the gym got to me after the second game, so I was really exhausted and it wore me down, especially trying to get the young kids to win first. But the unlimited team, they’re pros. So they got together, they banded together and held strong.”

Cole shared a bench during the high-school game with former Rice and Cincinnati star Kenny Satterfield. Then a few minutes later, Satterfield suited up against Cole for EBC representative Certified. It was just par for the course for the two Bronx natives. “It was definitely a weird thing,” Cole said. “Me and Kenny Sat are from Castle Hill, same hood together, so we always like to battle each other. One thing about Kenny Sat – he’s one helluva player and one helluva coach.”

More than five hours after it was slated to tipoff, the Hoops in the Sun championship began.

Mike Glover was literally on the court when Bingo’s All-Stars and the Sean Bell All-Stars took the court, but his mind seemed elsewhere. All the sitting and standing around because of rain and the change of location from Orchard Beach to the Baychester Community Center, had a negative impact on the Iona College-bound forward.

“We didn’t think we were gonna play,” Glover said, his way of admitting he didn’t play his best early.

Fortunately for Bingo’s All-Stars, Glover woke up from his slumber, scoring 12 fourth-quarter points to lead his team's club back from a 16-point deficit and to a thrilling 120-115 victory, the team’s second HITS title in its 11 years and first since 2008.

“The best game in Hoops in the Sun history,” Hoops in the Sun CEO Joe Cruz said. “The marquee teams, the players, the atmosphere, e five hours of waiting. It was worth the wait.”

Glover finished with 30 points, Keydren Clark earned MVP honors after tallying a game-high 34 points, and former LIU standout Antawn Dobie had 23. Corsley Edwards led Sean Bell with 30 points, B.J. McFarland followed with 24 points, and Kenny Satterfield, a one-time standout at Cincinnati, had 21.

“We showed the heart to win and we wanted it more at the end,” Clark said.

Sean Bell was in control from the start, leading 56-47 at halftime. The differential grew to 64-52 on a McFarland layup early in the third quarter. “The delay bothered everybody,” coach Bingo Cole said. “We couldn’t wake up.”

Eventually, they did, going on a 15-2 run, thanks to seven points from Clark, the former St. Peter's standout who led the nation in scoring.

Sean Bell, however, answered, taking advantage of its size differential in the paint with second-chance opportunities as Glover went to the bench with four fouls. They led 86-70, the largest margin of the evening, after a pair of Satterfield free throws and Edwards layup.

Glover returned to start the fourth quarter, despite the four fouls. Along with his brother, Anthony (12 points), a former St. John’s standout, Bingo’s All-Stars began to hold its own on the glass, and the game turned. They began to get out in transition and turn Sean Bell over.

Mike Glover converted consecutive baskets in transition to kick start an 18-4 run, and when John (Mookie) Thomas drained a deep 3-pointer from the left wing, Bingo’s All-Stars was within a point, at 95-94, bringing the crowd to its feet.

Mike Glover’s offensive rebound and follow a minute later gave Bingo’s All-Stars its first lead, 101-99, since the first half, and he later added an emphatic right-handed slam to extend to a three-point edge.

“That’s what he does – he’s the heart and soul of this team,” Clark said. “He gives us great energy.”

Mike Glover has displayed an ability to dominate on the city’s many streetball leagues the last few years, as he did in the fourth quarter Sunday night. Now, the versatile forward better known as “Optimus Prime,” will move on to the next stage of his life at Iona College.

“Class starts next Monday,” he said, smiling. “I can’t wait.”

On the last regular season night of the HITS 2010 season, Jamel White, in his first ever HITS game, made a statement. A very clear statement: Go after the HITS scoring record in your first game ever in the tournament. Scoring 26 points in the first half, he put himself in striking distance of "Serious Satellite" Kenny Satterfield's record of 68 points back in 2008. By the end of the third quarter, not only was he in reach, but he was in the vicinity of dismantling the record. White scored his 69th point on a free throw conversion, but he didn't stop there.

White finished with 87 points, 33 coming in the third quarter (HITS record for most points scored by a player in one quarter), 28 coming in the fourth - hitting 16 three-pointers to conclude the 2010 HITS Regular Season. DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars defeated BSC All-Stars 130-102 in the process - solidifying the 2nd seed in the 2010 HITS Playoffs beginning Friday night at Baychester Community Center at 6:00pm.

"It was definitely a great accomplishment for Jamel," says Co-CEO Randy Cruz. "He came out firing, connecting on three-pointers, found the rhythm early and he never looked back. Satterfield's record was in reach within the third quarter and by the time you knew it or looked in the books, he was in the 80's. It's the first time we've had a player score more than 70 and 80 points so it's great for us and it's a wonderful way to walk into the 2010 playoffs with a magnificent performance displayed by Jamel White."

The Hoops in the Sun All-Stars had dominated their opponents from Maryland for nearly the entire game. Each time the Eastern Shore Basketball League stars tried to inch closer, HITS quickly answered. The fourth quarter was no different.

ESBL pulled within six with less than three minutes to play but Steve Burtt Jr. didn’t want to hear anything about a comeback. The former Rice HS and Iona College star completed a 3-point play to put the game out of reach and secure an eventual, 126-112 win for the HITS stars at the league’s Bash at the Beach at Orchard Beach in The Bronx on a steamy Sunday afternoon. Burtt Jr. scored a team-high 27 points and earned game MVP honors.

“They looked to me when the game got close and I was able to make a play just by being aggressive,” he said.

Iona-bound forward Mike Glover tallied 24 points and Miguel “Miles High” Millien scored 18. Jeff Early, who is headed to Monroe College, added 12. Stacey Brown, who later won the dunk contest, led ESBL with a game-high 36 points and Oize Menax had 28. Melvin (The Executioner) Creddle, fresh off a big win at Tri-State on Friday, scored 10 straight points for the HITS All-Stars in the second quarter as they opened up a 65-51 halftime lead. “It’s always fun out here and to not have such an intense situation,” Burtt said. “It’s always good to come out here and have fun with your friends.”

No one had more than the Bronx native Glover. The 6-foot-5 forward caught seven alley-oop dunks in the game, including five in the second quarter and three from streetball legend Kenny Satterfield. Each one felt harder than the next including a monstrous one-handed slam as he came soaring in from the left side in transition to help secure bragging rights for league CEOs Joe and Randy Cruz.

“It’s always good to get a good win and get a few dunks in,” Glover said. “It’s always good to talk about it after you win a basketball game.”

Noah stops by HITS: Chicago Bulls forward Joakim Noah, a Manhattan native, found a seat in the front row for the fourth quarter of the all-star game. The 6-foot-11 former University of Florida star was dressed in a red tank top, jeans and black sunglass. He completed an NBA trio in attendance that included former Nets stars Kenny Anderson and Darryl Dawkins. “I have friends out here,” Noah said. “They told me to come out. I’m down.”

H2O topsSapp for 3-point title: Queens native Haron (H2O) Hargrave buried the money-ball on the final rack for a score of nine in the final to best last season’s champion Jessie Sapp, who played at Georgetown. Hargrave posted a score of 11 in the semifinals.

The Raven stops by: Ray Rice, Running Back for the Baltimore Ravens, was also in attendance during Hoops in the Sun's Bash at the Beach Weekend, enjoying the festivities and appreciating the wonderful atmosphere the league possesses.

R2K 110, Rosedale Trailblazers 106: Devon Clarke scored 20 points and former St. Raymond and St. John's guard Omari Lawrence dropped in 16 for R2K in an overtime win. R2K led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but watched Rosedale, which has now lost two in a row after starting 4-0, rally to force overtime. Queens native Haron (H20) Hargrave dropped in 28 points for Rosedale and Mo Hughley, who played at Van Buren, had 21. Manhattan College-bound forward Roberto Colonette scored 16 and Fairfield alum Herbie Allen added 23.

BSC All-Stars 110, Warriors 4 Christ 99: Ramon Clemente dropped in 25 points for the BSC All-Stars. Brooklyn native Courtney Castro had 22, including three 3-pointers, and Giovanni McLean had 14. Dexter Gray added 14. Former Iona College star Steve Burtt Jr. scored 22 of his game-high 34 points in the first half for Warriors 4 Christ. Joey Dorsett had 17 and former Fordham star Adrian Watson added 11.

Bingo's All-Stars 95, Young Ones 89: Corey (Homicide) Williams scored 32 points for the Bingo All-Stars. Adris (2 Hard 2 Guard) DeLeon led the Young Ones with 37 points. The game was moved to the Baychester Community Center because of rain at Orchard Beach.

Team 914 120, Rosedale Trailblazers 112: Jomo Belfor had 24 points, Jason Holmes had 23 points and Torey Thomas added 17 points for 914. Kyle Cuffe had 12 points and Aaron Williams had 10. Akeem Johnson had 23 points, Allen had 22 points and Hughley and Hargrave each had 21 points for Rosedale. Derrick Dawkins added 11.

Sean Bell All-Stars 109, Bedford Y 107: Daon Merritt had 22 points, Quincy St. Hallire had 18 points and Cliff Clinkscales had 16 for Sean Bell, which was down big in the second half. Justin Marshall had 13 points and Cameron Tyler added 11. Jerome Richardson had 36 points, Jerel Blassingame had 18 points and Woody Souffraint added 16 for Bedford. Kevin Josey had 11.

We've officially renamed the All-Star event to Bash at the Beach, says CEO Randy Cruz. There’s been many memorable All-Star Games here at the beach and with 2010 being a new year for everything, we figured renaming the event to Bash at the Beach should spice up the event even more. Nobody who comes on July 18th will leave disappointed. This place is truly designed for an event like this and we’ve just been fortunate to be here after ten years and having the ability to incorporate one of the best weekends New York City summer basketball has to offer.

"The Big Bully" Geoff McDermott (Team 914) goes off for 30 vs Bedford Y, Jerel Blassingame, formerly out of UNLV debuts w/ Bedford Y and Warriors 4 Christ gets their first victory of the season, knocking off R2K in a summary of HITS Week 3.

Team 914, defending champions, stayed on the undefeated course by defeating Bedford Y, 100-88. McDermott led with 30 points, while Blassingame led Bedford Y w/ 24 points in his HITS debut. Warriors 4 Christ knocked off R2K for the first W of the season, 120-106, led by Hakeem Johnson w/ 23 points. R2K were led by Dwight Hardy with 37 points.

In another tough game, the Rosedale Blazers held off the Youngones 109-103 to remain undefeated. Rosedale, led by Herbie Allen, held onto a victory late in the game, even though his team was up by as much as 20 points, despite a furious fourth quarter comeback by the Youngones. The Youngones were led by the sensational play of Jabari Hines with 34 points in his HITS debut. DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars remain undefeated as well by defeating Hoop Street, 103-95, led by Camron Tyler with 19 points. Hoop Street was led by Brett "The Hitman" Harvey w/ 20 points. Bingo's All-Stars, despite being up my as much as 20 points in the first half (see the trend?), were able to walk out of week 3 with a victory over the BSC All-Stars, 119-114 in Overtime. BSC All-Stars crawled their way back into the game - even to the point where they had a chance to win at the end of regulation but missed the three point basket.

Team 914, Rosedale Blazers, DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars remain undefeated at 3-0.

Hoops in the Sun 2010: Week Two

In Week two action, in a defensive "Game 7 of NBA Finals" type matchup, the BSC All-Stars, 2010 Spring League Champs and who started 0-1, got back on track by defeating the Young Ones 65-62, led by Andy Genao with 17 points. Georgey DeLeon led the Young Ones with 16 points. The Rosedale Blazers remained undefeated by defeating the 2008 Champs Bingo's All-Stars 87-83. Rosedale, up by as many as 20, saw their lead dwindle in the third, as well as overtaken by Bingo early in the fourth, but they remained their composure, re-captured the lead and never looked back.

Two teams who play alike - Bedford Y & Hoop Street, tangled it up on Sunday afternoon with Hoop Street gaining their first victory of the season over Bedford Y, 99-84. Jeff Early led Hoop Street with 24 points, Woody Suffrant lead Bedford Y with 18 points. Defending Champs Team 914 defeated Warriors 4 Christ (despite a minor rain delay), 106-89. 914 were led by Will Cadiz with 20 points, Jessie Sapp led W4C with 24 points. The Weekend nightcap saw 2007 Champs DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars defeat R2K, 85-72. Kenny Satterfield led DDN with 21 points. Rasheen Jenkins led R2K with 18 points.

The 2010 Youth League kicked off this weekend as well with New Heights defeating Dominican Power 47-34 (16 & Under). In a muchly, highly anticipated season opener, the Hoops in the Sun 2010 season kicked off regardless of mother natures' attitude this weekend. Sunny skies or not - NYC streetball returned to Orchard Beach in the Bronx.

Day 1 featured defending 2009 champions Team 914 knocking off Hoop Street in a rematch from last years' playoffs 104-87. Jomo Belfor led Team 914 with 35 points, 27 coming in the second half, while Rashamel Jones, former UConn product, led Hoop Street with 20 points. DDN/Sean Bell All Stars, 2007 champions, defeated Warriors 4 Christ 81-72. McDonald's High School All-American Jayvaughn Pinkston led DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars with 20 points, while Joseph Dorsett led Warriros 4 Christ with 19 points.

Day 2 featured R2K, who's biggest lead was 25 points, withstanding a vicious second half comeback from the Young Ones to come away with the victory 91-88. R2K were led by former St. John's product Omari Lawrence with 20 points, while Young Ones were led by Adris DeLeon with 32 points, 24 coming in the second half. Bingo's All-Stars knocked off the scrappy Bedford Y 90-79, with Mike Glover of Bingo's All-Stars leading the way with 29 points, while Jay Tornah led Bedford Y with 25 points. The weekend capper saw Rosedale Blazers defeat the 2010 Spring League Champions, BSC All-Stars, 100-88. Herbie Allen led the Rosedale Blazers with 20 points & Andy Genaeo led the BSC All-Stars with 16 points.

I got a request from one of our loyal on-line responders to make a TOP 10 list of the greatest moments on the playground last summer. And so with some assistance from some playground experts, I’m about to set it off.

10. Brandon Jennings at EBC - Young Money plays in his first official EBC game.

08. John Wall’s left-handed dunk at Elite 24 @ Rucker Park - Came down with the left-hand and leapt like superman with the left-hand yoke that brought the park to its feet.

ROCKET LAUNCHER: New Houston Rocket Ron Artest makes HITS debut with Bingo's All-Stars

Saturday was a rainy day at Sun Stadium.

That didn't stop "Tru Warrior" Ron Artest, the newly acquired Houston Rocket, from stepping onto the courts of Sun Stadium at Hoops in the Sun Sunday afternoon and making his HITS debut vs Team 914, in which both teams were battling for playoff positioning.

Bingo's All-Stars, who already had MVP candidate Mike Glover on the low box, brought in Artest to create an amazing front court tandem. Glover, who posted up 51 points vs R2K Saturday afternoon, was looking for another monster game, and he didn't disappoint.

Artest checked into the game with roughly six minutes remaining in the first quarter, looking to find his rhythm in his first game at HITS. Just like Marcus Williams of PR Pride/K1X and now the Golden State Warriors, it took Artest a while to get accustomed to the beach setting. Team 914, not worrying about Artest, had Will Cadiz making everything he threw up at the rim, even scoring on Artest on one defensive possession. Team 914 had the lead going into halftime 50-45, but the second half is where everything started to heat up.

Glover took his game to another level in the second half, hearing from the announcers that he was a MVP candidate. He had 51 the day before and almost repeated that mark Sunday afternoon by racking up 49 points and 22 rebounds. At least six to seven consecutive possessions the ball was in Glover's hands, either drawing a foul on Team 914 or making the basket for a three-point play. Both teams were tied at 102-102with two seconds remaining. Bingo's All-Stars threw the ball away on the inbounds pass, which never touched anyone's hands. Still with two seconds remaining, Team 914 was called for a five second violation. STILL, with two seconds remaining in regulation, Bingo's All-Stars tried to win the game on a three-pointer but was unsuccessful. This game was sent into overtime.

Both teams knew this was a very important game for playoff possibilities and neither team wanted to go down in defeat. With Glover fouling out early in the overtime session, many were turning for Artest to take over in the extra session. But it was Curtis Stinson and Keydren Clark who came up big for Bingo's All-Stars, hitting key three-point shots to put Bingo up for good and eventually knocking off Team 914 in overtime 116-110.

HITS All-Stars wins battle of Beach vs Street at Dyckman

In probably one of the most anticipated streetball games in NYC history, Hoops in the Sun All-Stars, representing Orchard Beach in the Boogie Down Bronx, took on the Dyckman All-Stars, representing the Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan.

A game that was scheduled, then canceled, then re-scheduled at 1:00am Friday, it finally went down Friday night with talent fully loaded and if you were in attendance Friday night, you may have just witnessed another historical event in the annals of NYC streetball.

With players such as Kemba Walker, Dwight Hardy, Brian Williams (Tennessee) and the infamous "Cab Driver", HITS were stacked more than IHOP on a Mother's Day morning. Sporting the fresh to death blue and white K1X All-Star uni's that were worn during HITS All-Star 2008, HITS All-Stars were ready to play in front of a standing room only crowd at Dyckman park.

Bobby Cey, Uncle G-Stacks and Kenny Stevens called the action in a collaborated three-man announcing alignment, reminiscing Mike Breen, Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy.

Feeling each other out in the first half, both teams traded buckets, trying to establish a groove and a flow to the game. Dyckman All-Stars, who brought out former Iowa State star Curtis Stinson, "The Franchise" John Strickland, Mike Wilson and "Baby Shaq", were hitting from all cylinders in the first half, including an amazing, jaw dropping, crowd buzzing spin move that was provided by Curtis Stinson off of the Cab Driver. HITS All-Stars weren't disgruntled as they maintained their composure and kept it close, only being down by six in the half, 48-42.

Second half made the difference throughout the duration of the game for the HITS All-Stars.Players such as "Silence of the Lambs" Will Cadiz and Aaron "The Problem" Williams, made key shots and lent a helping hand to the already dynamic backcourt HITS walked on the floor with. Taking the lead midway, HITS All-Stars never let their foot off of the gas peddle. A three point shot by Hardy, Cab Driver and Williams potentially sealed the deal for HITS, going up by as many as 20 points, ultimately silencing the loud and then-rawkus Dyckman crowd.

HITS would walk off victorious only after Kemba Walker laced the Dyckman crowd, and the guy that was guarding him, with a crossover that brought everyone out of their bleacher seats, causing them to run on the court.

A great moment for both Hoops in the Sun & Dyckman, and a great moment for streetball and its fans. If you weren't there, you must not be, as Uncle G-Stacks would say it, a streetball junkie.

MARCUS WILLIAMS OF PR PRIDE/K1X NETS HOME VICTORY IN HITS DEBUT

As if PR Pride/K1X couldn't pull out something new out of their bag of tricks, they did it again Saturday afternoon vs Money Train.

The 2-1 PR Pride/K1X squad took on the 1-2 Money Train Saturday afternoon in another high scoring affair. But just a couple of minutes of the first quarter, came walking in the park alongside Andre Barrett was former UConn and current New Jersey Nets star Marcus Williams.

It didn't take long for Barrett and Williams to sub into the game and join Satterfield in the three guarded backcourt. Money Train didn't look worried about the Prides' NBA triangle offense as Antawn Dobie and Corey "The Undertaker" took matters into their own hands. With Money Train up by five points at the half, 53-48, it looked to everyone in the crowd that the Pride was in for a very serious battle.

It does take a while for a player, especially a NBA player to get accustomed to the outdoor environment HITS presents with the heat and wind coming from the beach, and Marcus Williams finally started to settle down in the second half. Trying to find his niche' in the first half, Williams started looking for his shot and caught an awareness of who he was playing with in the second half. Becoming a playmaker and making some outrageous passes to his teammates Barrett and Satterfield officially introduced Marcus Williams into the Hoops in the Sun fray.

Money Train made the game interesting. Keeping the lead until the six minute mark in the fourth quarter, PR Pride/K1X started to make their run and by the time you looked at the scoreboard, they were on pace for a fourth straight 100 plus point scoring game. " The Undertaker " poured in 31 points and a game high 18 rebounds for his Money Train squad, as well as Antawn Dobie pouring in 29 points and 6 assists but the NBA triangle offense became too much for the Train to handle in the fourth quarter as PR Pride/K1X pulled away with a 127-125 victory, going to 3-1 on the season.

Kenny Satterfield finished with 36 points, 7 assists and 8 rebounds. Andre Barrett finished with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and newcomer to HITS, Marcus Williams finished with 26 points, 11 assists and 4 rebounds. Shagari Alleyne for PR Pride/K1X recorded a triple double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and a new HITS record of 17 blocks

MONEY INC, COURT MASTERS AND DRAGONS CROWNED 2008 SPRING LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Money Inc, the fourth seed in the playoffs, knocked off the number three seeded R2K in the 2008 Spring League Championship in what many people would already label as an instant classic.

This game was non-stop action from the opening tip. Money Inc, as the veteran team, had full control of the game being up by as much as 15 points. First half was shaky for the young and exciting R2K but looked to pick up the pace in the second half.

The pace picked up for both teams. R2K was climbing their way back in it and at the same time, Money Inc was trying to close the doors on their opponents. Money Inc led R2K 75-66 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter would prove to be the difference in the contest. Smelling the championship, Money Inc was looking for that scoring option to get them over the hump and they found that in Lloyd Clinton and Gordon Malone. Malone would score 13 in the fourth, while Clinton provided 11, including two free throws late in the game that sealed R2K's fate.

But this game did get interesting in the final minutes, as it did in R2K's semi-final matchup against Total Package. Down by eight points with a minute and a half to go, Rah Jenkins of R2K would hit a three-point shot from the top of the key that brought his team to within four points, 97-93. Money Inc. would turn the ball over on their next possession, giving the ball back to R2K with a minute to go.

Yup, that man again, Rah Jenkins would hit another three-point shot from the right wing in front of two Money Inc defenders, closing the deficit to one, 97-96. Now this is where it gets interesting. Gordon Malone would hit one free-throw, giving Money Inc the lead, 98-86 with less than 30 seconds remaining.

In what would decide the game, R2K had possession and had the ball in Rah Jenkins' hands. He would break away from his defender and hit a three-point shot. Crowd just went crazy. Should be a one point lead, 99-98 for R2K right? BUT...referee Lamar Parker calls an offfensive foul on Jenkins.

The basket was negated and Money Inc took over with 20 seconds remaining. Fouls, foul shots and missed opportunities would soon follow that costly possession. R2K wouldn't score the rest of the way as Money Inc crawled out of Baychester gym with a 102-96 win over R2K, becoming the 2008 Spring League champions

Money Inc's win automatically sends them into the Hoops in the Sun summer league, which starts in less than three weeks.

Warriors, down by as much as 20 points in the 2nd half, came roaring back to tie the game up late in the fourth quarter, and with their pressure defense, made it difficult for the #1 seed C.A.S.W. to close out the game.

After two overtime sessions, the #4 seeded Warriors overcame a 20 point deficit and two overtimes to pull off the upset over #1 seeded C.A.S.W. 63-62 and will meet
the Dragons in the 16 & under championship tomorrow at 2:00pm)

In possibly the main event of the evening, everyone was waiting for R2K to go up against Total Package and both teams didn't disappoint. The game was pretty much well balanced throughout, but R2K was up by as much as 13 points heading into the fourth quarter. Rah Jenkins of R2K, with a sensational 8 three-pointers (29 points in total) kept his team afloat majority of the game. And when it came to crunch time, the big money players such as "Silence fo the Lambs" Will Cadiz, "Born Again" Lee Church and the "Transformers" duo cashed in at the most opportune time.

Cadiz, a bonafied HITS Hall of Famer, wasn't going down without a fight, scoring 10 of his 24 points in the 4th quarter, while "Optimus Prime" scored 14 of his 24 points in the 4th quarter and overtime session. As the game was tied at 94 in the final seconds, R2K had their chances of taking the lead but couldn't capitalize. Total Package got the stop they were looking for and sent this game into overtime.

R2K came out the gates of the overtime, scoring the first six points of the extra session. Total Package, weathering the storm, brought the lead back down to two. In the final seconds, down 100-98, Total Package had one final possession and put the ball into the MVP's hands for a three-point shot but was unsuccessful. #3 seeded R2K held off the #2 seeded Total Package to advance in the championship game on Sunday .vs. #4 seeded Money Inc. at 4:00pm.

BLAX BALLERS EDGE OUT TOTAL PACKAGE FOR FIRST SEED IN SPRING LEAGUE FINALE

It was basically midnight madness last night at the Spring League finale. Two teams, Total Package, who coming into last night's game was 4-0 and Blax Ballers, at 3-1, were battling for first seed in next week's playoffs.

It looked to be Total Package's game throughout the first half and third quarter. Blax Ballers made their run late in the third and pretty much stayed afloat throughout the fourth. They did take the lead at the six minute mark in the fourth quarter but that's when it turned into a basket for basket contest. Numerous lead changes and three consecutive three-point plays for Blax Ballers had their momentum rolling.

No team wanted to give the other a chance to walk away with the victory. As time got under a minute left, Blax Ballers were up by three, 106-103, and Stephon Malliet of Total Package would hit a three pointer from the top of the key to tie the game up at 106.

Blax Ballers would later come down and hit two free-throws to go up 108-106. Total Package had their opportunity to tie it up at that point but couldn't capitalize and had to commit a foul with eleven seconds left.

Blax Ballers would miss both free throws, leaving the game wide open. Numerous of three point attempts and even layups were unsuccessful for Total Package, but the ball went out of bounds on Blax Ballers with one second left on the clock.

Perry Wilks would take the last shot for Total Package but would miss the three point attempt.

At 12:15am, we finally got our winner, and it was the Blax Ballers edging out Total Package in an instant Spring League classic, 108-106.

This now sets up the (2) Total Package vs (3) R2K playoff matchup next Saturday afternoon at 3pm. (1) Blax Ballers will take on the (4) Money Inc. Saturday afternoon at 5pm.

LA LAKERS GUARD KOBE BRYANT WINS FIRST MVP AWARD...AND THIS RELATES TO HOOPS IN THE SUN HOW?

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, after being in the league for 12 years, has won his first regular season MVP award. Being regarded as the league's best player but never its most valuable, Bryant finally earned the honor earlier today.

Now, how does Kobe Bryant winning his first regular season MVP relate to Hoops in the Sun?

Well, you can make the arguement that players such as "Primal Fear" Darren Phillip and Rasaun "Crabby" Young have been the league's best players for a number of years, but have yet to win a regular season MVP award.

Young, who has been in the league for six years, had his best individual season back in 2003, came second in the voting to Smush Parker for the MVP award. Phillip, who has been in the league for seven years, had his best individual season in 2005, but was going up against tough competition with eventual winners Will Cadiz and John Strickland.

Young averaged 25ppg in 2003, while Phillip averaged 22ppg and 17rpg in 2005. It is ironic that these two players haven't won the regular season MVP award in their entire HITS career? Even without the MVP award, Young has gone on to win two championships (2005, 2006), while playing in four of the last six championship games, while Phillip has won one championship (2001) and his team has made it to the championship game four years in a row (2004-2007), five in the last seven years.

The last two seasons, the regular season MVP award has been dominated by one man, "Serious Satellite" Kenny Satterfield (Dwight Hardy was Co-MVP in 2007 with Satterfield). Satterfield has made it easy for fans and the league to determine the regular season MVP, averaging 40ppg in back to back seasons (only player to do so), winning the All-Star Game MVP in 2007, breaking the HITS scoring record with 62 points in 2006 and the only player in league history to score over 50 points in back to back games (62 and 59 in 2006).

But will Satterfield three-peat as regular season MVP in 2008? Or will Darren Phillip and Rasaun Young finally get their chance at regular season MVP glory?

After yesterday's Men's Spring League games, the playoff picture isn't 100% crystal clear yet. Total Package and Blax Ballers seem to have an edge for the #1 and #2 seeds, but they'll go head to head next Saturday at 4pm for playoff seeding.

Money Inc. lost a crucial game to an R2K team, who desperately needed a win to stay alive in the playoff race. With R2K's win over Money Inc., it puts them in the 3rd seed for now, with Money Inc. in the 4th spot. Complete Game also lost yesterday, which puts them at 1-3, but if they defeat R2K next week Saturday at 2pm, it can cause serious problems on who will get the final spots in the playoffs.

HITS SIGNS DEAL WITH K1X TO BECOME THE NEW APPAREL SPONSOR OF THE LEAGUE

Hoops in the Sun signs deal with K1X to become the league's new apparel sponsor. Terms of the deal are undisclosed.

HITS FLASHBACK: STEVE BURTT, JR SCORES 59 POINTS FOR "THE FIRM" IN 2007 SPRING LEAGUE DEBUT

Over a year to the day, April 22, 2007, Steve Burtt Jr. participated in the innagural Hoops in the Sun Spring League with the team The Firm. Providing the fans with a live legal thriller, Burtt Jr. compiled 59 points, which is still a Spring League scoring record. He hit 10 three-pointers (five in each half) and was 16-29 from the field. He would then tally up 47 points two weeks later, giving him an average of 53 ppg for the 2007 Spring League.

He hasn't shown up yet for the 2008 Spring League, but you never know.
